How Yoga Therapy Differs from a General Class

A general yoga class usually follows one sequence for everyone in the room. Yoga therapy starts from the individual: their goals, their current abilities, and any limitations. Postures, breathing, and pace are chosen and adapted with that person in mind, and the practice is reviewed and adjusted over time.

Explore the Practice

Asanas

Adapted physical postures. Movements are modified, supported with props, or replaced so they suit the person rather than the other way round.

Pranayama

Guided breathing techniques that bring attention to the breath, introduced gradually and practised at a comfortable pace.

Relaxation

Practices that encourage awareness and rest, such as guided relaxation lying down, often used to close a session.

Meditation

Attention and mindfulness practices that carry the quiet of the session into stillness. See also our Meditation page.

People Who Often Explore Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy is approached individually, so it is not limited to people who are already flexible or experienced.

  • Beginners who would like a gentle, guided start
  • People who prefer an individual pace to a group class
  • Those wanting a regular routine for movement and relaxation
  • Older adults looking for adapted, supported practice
  • People returning to activity, with their doctor’s agreement
  • Anyone curious about combining breath, movement, and stillness

What a Session May Include

01

A conversation about goals, experience, and any health considerations.

02

Gentle warm-up and breath awareness.

03

Selected postures and breathing, adapted as needed.

04

Relaxation or meditation, with suggestions for practice at home.

The exact format depends on the guidance currently offered. Please ask about session length, frequency, and whether sessions are individual or in small groups.

What to Expect

Ask about session format, instructor experience, suitability, modifications, and precautions. Wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement, and let the instructor know before each session if anything has changed in how you feel.

Yoga practice should never be painful. You are always free to rest, modify, or skip a posture.

If you have a significant medical condition, injury, pregnancy-related concern, or persistent symptoms, consult an appropriate healthcare professional before beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be flexible or fit to start?

No. Yoga therapy begins from where you are today, and postures are adapted to suit you.

Is it suitable during pregnancy?

Please speak with your doctor or midwife first, and tell the instructor about your pregnancy so practice can be adapted or postponed as advised.

Can yoga therapy replace medical treatment?

No. Yoga therapy can sit alongside the care you receive, but it is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a healthcare professional.

Can I practise at home?

Many people do. Ask your instructor which practices are suitable to continue on your own and how often.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothing and water. Ask whether mats and props are provided.
